Samsung’s chip division is treated as one of the three surviving major memory suppliers. Its standard DRAM and NAND exposure remains cyclical and commodity-like, while HBM offers a more specialized, potentially higher-margin product with greater technological differentiation.
The memory cycle results from long factory lead times, block-like capacity additions, uneven demand and customers’ precautionary ordering. When new capacity arrives into slower demand, suppliers may continue producing at low prices because fixed costs are high.
AI infrastructure broadens demand across HBM, server DRAM and enterprise NAND. Supplier discipline, long-term contracts and HBM’s greater wafer requirements could make the next downturn shallower than historical collapses, although they do not end the cycle.
Samsung’s memory business remains dependent on hyperscaler spending and exposed to a synchronized capacity buildout. CXMT could disrupt the oligopoly, customers may renegotiate contracts, and hyperscalers may increasingly develop capabilities in-house.
The source says the chip division’s strong current numbers and apparently attractive multiples may be misleading at a cyclical peak. Shares historically anticipate weaker future conditions, and current slowing price momentum is considered a warning despite record spot prices and tight supply.
Samsung’s chip division is cited as having earned exceptionally strong profits during the 2017–2018 boom but operating with almost no profit in 2023, illustrating the magnitude of the memory cycle.
Shared company-group thesis: Samsung’s chip division is identified as part of the three-supplier memory oligopoly. The thesis applies to that division and should not be read as an equally complete analysis of Samsung Electronics’ other businesses.

The source gives a strongly bullish 20-year view for the memory sector, supported by its essential role in computing and the potential for HBM to improve differentiation and profitability. This does not imply that Samsung Electronics as a whole will have the same outcome or that the chip division will avoid recurring cycles.
